This list is a real killer.
10. Alton Coleman and Debra Brown
Born Elton Coleman in November 1955, the middle of five children from a prostitute in the Waukegan ghetto, the future terror of the Midwest was raised by his maternal grandmother. Dubbed “Pissy” by his playmates, for a childhood tendency to wet his pants, Coleman grew up running with street gangs, cultivating an unsavory reputation.
In January 1974, Coleman was arrested for the abduction, rape, and robbery of an elderly woman in Waukegan. A prison psychiatric profile dubbed Coleman a “pansexual, willing to have intercourse with any object, women, men, children, whatever.” His numerous arrests were concentrated in the area of sex crimes, a propensity which led him on a lethal crime spree and, eventually, to the death house.
In the summer of 1984, he teamed up with twenty-one year old Debra Brown for a brutal 54-day rampage across the Midwest. The two went on a six-state spree of murders, rapes and kidnappings in which every day they committed a new act of violence. By the time of their arrests, they left eight dead in their wake. Coleman and Brown were sentenced to death.
9. Angelo Buono and Kenneth Bianchi, the Hillside Stranglers
The Hillside Stranglers, Kenneth Alessio Bianchi and Angelo Buono, kidnapped, raped, tortured, and killed females from twelve to twenty-eight years old, in the hills above Los Angeles during over four-months from 1977 to 1978.
Their murderous scheming was fairly simple. Buono frequently dressed as a police officer and carried a fake badge to gain their intended victim’s trust and persuade them to get inside his “unmarked police car.” After targeting a victim, Bianchi often assisted with the abduction and in bringing the victim to Buono’s house to be locked inside a spare bedroom that Buono and Bianchi referred to as the torture chamber.
These cousins said that they enjoyed killing Los Angeles women just for the thrill that they experienced during the process of torture and murder, making them one of the most chilling and heinous killing duos of modern times.
8. Kevin Crump and Allan Baker
Two career criminals murdered Ian Lamb, a complete stranger for $20, a pack of cigarettes and a couple of gallons of gasoline. Then, for no other reason than that one of the men had once worked for her family as a farm hand, they kidnapped Virginia Morse, a young mother of three, from her home. Morse was raped and tortured repeatedly while Crump and Baker drove to neighboring Queensland. Next, they tied her to a tree and shot her in the eyes.
Recently, Australian courts have struggled with the constitutionality of real life imprisonment where particularly horrible killers are “never to be released.”
7. Gerald and Charlene Gallego
Gerald Armond Gallego never met his father, who was an inmate at San Quentin Correctional Facility, and holds the highly distinguished status of the first person to ever be executed by means of the gas chamber in the state of Mississippi. By the time he met Charlene in 1977, he had a record of more than 20 criminal charges, including rape, incest and sodomy.
Charlene met Gerald in 1977 at a poker bar and the two fell in love instantly. The couple moved in together a week later, discovered a shared passion for seriously twisted sexual activity and soon devised their murderous plan for getting an endless supply of “disposable sex slaves”.
After a killing spree spanning three years and several states, the couple was turned to the police in by Charlene’s parents. In July 1981, Charlene arranged a plea bargain: a confession and testimony against her husband in exchange for leniency. She did as agreed and received a sentence of 16 years and 8 months in prison. In July of 1997, Charlene was released from prison, having completed her sentence.
Gerald received two trials, one in California and one in Nevada. He was sentenced to death in both states. He died on July 18, 2002 from rectal cancer – how fitting.
6. The Birnies
The house at number 3 Moorhouse Street, Willagee, on the outskirts of Perth, Western Australia became the most notorious house in Australia. The house at number 3 Moorhouse Street was Australia’s very own House of Horrors. It was the love-nest, torture chamber and killing field of Catherine and David Birnie, a husband and wife serial killer team, the rarest form of serial killers. It was here that they committed atrocities to their young female victims.
David’s insatiable sexual appetite caused him to enlist wife Catherine into abducting, raping, and eventually, brutally murdering four women in the their Perth, Australia, love nest and torture chamber at 3 Moorhouse Street. David’s cruelty finally got to Catherine who couldn’t stand to participate in another murder. The victim escaped and resulted in the capture of the two serial killers.
5. Charles Ng and Leonard Lake
The son of a wealthy businessman, Ng was a rebellious teenager who was frequently caught stealing and was expelled from several schools. Ng joined the Marines where once again he was caught stealing, this time military weapons, and he served three years in Leavenworth Prison.
Upon his release, Ng moved in with Leonard Lake, a deviant whom he had met prior to serving at Leavenworth. He and Lake began a campaign of abduction, rape and murder based from Lake’s remote cabin. Altogether, the bodies of seven men, three women, two baby boys and forty-five pounds of bone fragments would be recovered from the cabin site.
The killings came to an end only through chance. Having broken the vice they were using to torture their victims, Lake and Ng drove into town to get a replacement. The clerk at the lumberyard spotted Ng trying to shoplift the vice and called the police. When they arrived, Ng had departed on foot. Upon being arrested, Lake gave the police the name of his partner and then swallowed two cyanide pills he had taped to the collar of his shirt. Ng, however, had disappeared.
In Ng’s absence, the police began to investigate Lake’s cabin. In addition to the corpses and body parts, they also unearthed caches of weapons, personal effects from the victims and even videotapes of Lake and Ng raping and killing in their bunker.
4. The Chicago Rippers
Robin Gecht & his friends rampaged Chicago in the 1980s. They talked about how they had kidnapped women off the streets, raped them, and stabbed them with knives, razors, tin can lids, and can openers. With piano wire, they then amputated one or both breasts and masturbated onto them. Gecht’s “rippers” took the flesh they had removed from their victims, cut it up, and consumed it as a form of ancient devilish communion.
The Mansonesque type of killer is rare —the person who can persuade others to kill or harm others for him. According to three confessions, Gecht was exactly that type of person. While Manson’s brood was larger, the three men who followed Gecht were just as deadly, and it’s quite unusual to have four people involved in such an extensive string of sexually sadistic murders.
3. Christopher Worrell and James Miller
Australia’s first serial killer partnership was made up of a charismatic psychopath and a dependent drifter who went on a killing spree that left seven women dead.
2. Gary and Thaddeus Lewingdon
During the late 1970s, the city of Columbus, Ohio and outlying areas were plagued by a series of indiscriminate and brutal murders, which claimed the lives of 10 people.
The “.22-caliber killings,” as they would later be dubbed by the media, began on December 10, 1977, with the murders of two women at Forkers Cafe in Newark, Ohio, some distance outside the city of Columbus. Joyce Vermilion and Karen Dodrill, had been shot multiple times as they walked out the rear door of the cafe, shortly after its closing at 2:30 a.m.
This and subsequent murders were distinguished by the amount of overkill — the bodies were literally bullet-ridden. Finally, in 1978 suspicion focused on two truly weird middle-aged brothers, one very much under the influence of the other. Police happened to find Gary when he was caught using one of the victim’s credit cards at a local department store. Once in police custody, Gary soon confessed to his role and confessed to his and his brother’s roles in the crimes.
1. Paul Bernardo and Karla Homolka
A pair of killers accused of 43 sex attacks and a string of killings, including Karla’s own sister.
