9. Mata Hari

mata-hari

Mata Hari was the stage name of Margaretha Geertruida “Grietje” Zelle MacLeod , born August 1876, a Dutch exotic dancer, courtesan, and accused spy who, although possibly innocent, was executed by firing squad in France for espionage for Germany during World War I. Promiscuous, flirtatious, and openly flaunting her body, she captivated her audiences and was an overnight success from the debut of her act at the Muse Guimet in 1905. She became the long-time mistress of the millionaire Lyon industrialist Emile Etienne Guimet, who had founded the Muse.

Boleyn sisters, Anne and Mary were both mistresses to King Charles VIII. While the latter was said to be prettier, Anne had brains that helped her fulfill her motives and desires. She never gave in to Kings advances until it was for her benefit. The demanding mistress even got Charles into breaking with Papal authority of Roman Catholic Church to become the head of the Church and make Anne Boleyn the Queen consort of England. Charles did marry Anne, but later had her beheaded for high treason.

Almost everyone unanimously despised Camilla when she was included in the lives and marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. As it turns out, however, this was not new, just newly discovered – Charles had had a thing for Camilla for several decades. Princess Diana died in 1997, and by 2005 Camilla Parker Bowles had already divorced her husband and wed Charles.

6. Marilyn Monroe (John Kennedy)

Marilyn Monroe-John Kennedy

Though never really proven with hard evidence, it is widely believed that Marilyn had a relationship with both John and Bobby Kennedy at the same time. Her closest friends said Marilyn’s heart belonged to John, but she was often seen with both men dancing or holding conversations. Many people feel that the “Happy Birthday” song to JFK said it all.

5. Monica Lewinsky (Bill Clinton)

Monica Lewinsky (Bill Clinton)

The famous blue dress with the genetic material. Monica was hired as an intern at the White House and began a relationship with Clinton in 1995. She later alleged that they had 9 sexual encounters together. Things got bad when Lewinsky confided to her friend and Defense co-worker Linda Tripp that she was involved with Clinton. Trip secretly recorded her conversations with Lewinsky (what a friend!) and then gave the tapes to Kenneth Star who was at the time investigating other matters regarding Clinton. Although Clinton denied the affair later, the evidence that Star had was simply too much to overcome. In 1998, Clinton admitted his relationship with Lewinsky and was later impeached as President.

4. Virginia Hill (Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegal)

Virginia Hill (Benjamin "Bugsy" Seigal)

No woman personified the mob girlfriend more than Virginia Hill, a.k.a. The Flamingo. A sharp-tongued Georgia peach with enough sass and guts to stand toe-to-toe with the likes of Frank Nitti, Al Capone, Joe Adonis and eventually Benny Siegel, Virginia was passed along from mobster to mobster but always managed to keep her status on the A-list of underworld women.

She is best known for her affair with Vegas entrepreneur Benny “Bugsy” Siegal. After Ben was killed, Virginia remained active in the Underworld and was one of the star witnesses of the Kefauver Commission hearings. She spent a great deal of time denying any knowledge or involvement with the mob in the public portions of the hearings, but behind closed doors, she admitted that more than one mobster had presented her with money or other gifts. When the straight-laced chairman from Tennessee asked her why mobsters thought so highly of her, she replied that it was because of her unmatched talent for performing oral sex. In typical Virginia fashion, the term she used was much more colorful and was capable of rendering much of the Commission speechless. She gave as good as she got in the Kefauver hearings, but lost her cool as she was leaving the hearing and physically assaulted a woman reporter who was part of the media pack that followed her out of the hearing room.

Eventually, Virginia headed back to Europe, settling in the Alps with her third husband. Even the way she died prompted speculation among mob-watchers.

In 1961, broke, in fear from the mob and the IRS, and no longer the young, sought-after Georgia peach, Virginia Hill swallowed a handful of sleeping pills, laid down in a snowdrift and took the Big Sleep. Some people claim it was the long arm of mob justice, but more likely it was suicide by a woman who had once been on top of the Underworld and couldn’t handle the fall from grace. After Ben was killed, Virginia remained active in the Underworld and was one of the star witnesses of the Kefauver Commission hearings. 3. Eva Braun (Adolf Hitler)

Eva Braun (Adolf Hitler)

Eva Braun met Hitler when she was just 17 years old. She worked as an assistant for Hitler’s photographer and then began a relationship with Hitler two years later. She eventually married Hitler and when the Third Reich began to collapse during the end of the war, Braun and Hitler committed suicide together. She was 33 and Hitler was 56. Amazingly, the German public really didn’t know about Braun until after her suicide, including a Jewish heritage. While hundreds of thousands of people died in the Battle of Berlin as the German and Russian troops sought to get control of Berlin in 1945, it was the death of 55-year old Hitler and 33-year old Braun in April 30, 1945 that ended the Third Reich and in effect the war. They committed suicide together in a sitting room of the bunker, she by biting into a capsule of cyanide.

2. Wallis Simpson (Edward VIII)

Wallis Simpson-Edward VIII

Only months into his reign, Edward VIII caused a constitutional crisis by proposing marriage to the American socialite Wallis Simpson, who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. The prime ministers of the United Kingdom and the Dominions opposed the marriage, arguing that the people would never accept a divorced woman with two living ex-husbands as queen. Edward knew that the government led by British Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin would resign if the marriage went ahead, which could have dragged the King into a general election and ruined irreparably his status as a politically neutral constitutional monarch. Rather than give up Mrs. Simpson, Edward chose to abdicate. He was succeeded by his younger brother Albert, who chose the regnal name George VI. With a reign of 325 days, Edward was one of the shortest-reigning monarchs in British and Commonwealth history. He was never crowned.
